Every two seconds someone needs a blood transfusion in the United States—Michigan hospital patients alone use 2,000 units a day.
This year, the American Red Cross needs to collect about 1,600 blood donations each working day to meet increasing hospital demands. While 75 percent of the U.S. population will have received a blood transfusion by the age of 75, only five percent of the population donates.
On Thursday, April 2, 2009 from 10:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. area residents can help alleviate the blood shortage by donating at the Air Zoo. In fact, in less than an hour, each blood donor could save as many as three lives.
All blood donors must be 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and must have a photo ID or donor card present. It is not required that blood donors pay admission to the Air Zoo to donate blood that day.
Volunteer blood donors are the only source of blood products for hospital patients in the United States. In fact, each blood donor could save as many as three lives with a single donation.
