KALAMAZOO, Mich.-Every two seconds someone in the United States needs a blood transfusion. One donation of a pint of blood can save up to three lives.
On Tuesday, April 19 from 10:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. area residents can help alleviate blood shortages by donating to the American Red Cross at the Air Zoo. The American Red Cross supplies approximately 40 percent of the nation's blood supply and provides blood for patients in nearly 3,000 hospitals across the United States.
Blood donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, be in good health and have a photo ID present. Donors are eligible to give blood every 56 days. Those who donate blood during the month of April will have the chance to win free groceries for the next month (up to a $250 value).
