Scholarship contest now open for Girls Science Academy camp
April 20, 2010
Scholarships are now available for the Air Zoo's Girls Science Academy camp, which features fun hands-on activities and the opportunity to speak with female experts about careers in aviation.
Campers will be introduced to flight and build their own model rockets, in addition to taking a behind-the-scenes tour of the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport and learning about the history of women in aviation. Campers will also have the chance to co-pilot a real airplane with an Experimental Aircraft Association expert.
"The Air Zoo is thrilled to offer scholarships for Girls Science Academy," said Debra Mixis, Air Zoo Deputy Director-Development, Marketing and Human Resources. "It gives girls who might not otherwise have the chance to attend the camp, an opportunity to experience it and learn about the science behind aviation."
Girls Science Academy is a weeklong camp offered July 19-23 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It is open to girls ages 9 to 14 and costs $225. Full and partial scholarships are available, and made possible by Fifth Third Bank. To apply for one, girls must write a one-page essay about themselves, explaining why they want to attend the camp and how they became interested in science, flight and space. Applicants must also include the amount of scholarship they are requesting. Essays must be received by Tuesday, June 1, 2010 to be considered.
Essays should be sent to:
