Scouting at the Air Zoo

The Air Zoo works with Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Brownies to learn about aviation, space and science. We have a variety of special events and classes held throughout the year.

Brownie Try-Its

Brownies will have the opportunity to complete all of their requirements for their badges.

Girl Scout Days

2010 Junior Girl Scout Aerospace Day

9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Junior Girl Scouts will earn their badge and experience aviation and space travel with tours of the Michigan Space Science Center and the exhibit floors of the museum. Scouts will have fun exploring flight travel by creating their own kite and glider, having an "air race" and having a blast at a model rocket launch! Finally, Scouts will reach into the past by speaking with individuals in the aviation community regarding flight before 1960, and grabbing the future by tasting astronaut food.

Cadette/Senior Girl Scout Space Exploration

9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

A space exploration badge can be yours by enjoying a fun day at the Air Zoo! Scouts will take an interest in astronomical phenomena, create their own constellation viewer and then construct a "flying" object while investigating the forces of flight. The day is complete with designing a human space colony, taking a look at careers in the space program and finding five ways to maintain interest in space travel and astronomy!

Cadette/Senior Girl Scout Women through Time

9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Girls can have a unique experience by speaking with a woman from a different era regarding technology, communication, travel, social roles/responsibilities and aviation! A historical and artistic collage will be made using newspapers from the 1920s to present day and applying it in an old method of decoupage. Scouts will complete their badge requirements by learning about the Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II and taking all they have learned to create a display for others to enjoy!

Boy Scout Days

Boy Scout Space Exploration Day

9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Scouts can complete nearly all the requirements for this exciting badge! Spend the day at the Air Zoo and discover the purpose behind space travel and the pioneers behind it. We will discover and experiment with Newton's Laws of Motion, discuss unmanned and manned space missions, how satellites work and design a unique inhabited Lunar base. The day is complete with viewing a model rocket launch!

We will provide you with your own model rocket kit to finalize the completion of this badge for a modest additional cost.

Limited to 200 Scouts. Registration is required by March 11, 2011.

Boy Scout Aviation Day 2011

9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

What better way to earn this badge than a fun-filled day at the Air Zoo! Scouts will complete all the requirements with a variety of activities including touring our fabulous exhibit, building a FPG-9 glider, performing a preflight inspection and investigating career opportunities! A detailed "Hands on Aviation" presentation will intrigue all Scouts by explaining the forces of flight and examining the control surfaces of aircraft.

Limited to 200 Scouts. Registration is required by May 13, 2011.

Cub Scout Days

Cub Scout Science Belt Loop

Cub Scout Day 2010

Let's earn our belt loop by discovering the scientific method and implementing it into our own experiment! We will complete the requirements by speaking with a representative of the science community and taking a tour of aviation.
