2017 Air Zoo Science Camps and Classes for Kids Aged PreK - 12th Grade

2017 Summer Camps at the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo

The Air Zoo offers the coolest science-based summer camps and classes in Southwest Michigan! Financial Aid and Extended Camp Day (4pm - 5pm) are available!


This summer, give your kids a summer camp experience they'll remember for the rest of their lives! (They'll learn a lot too, but we don't have to tell them that :) ). The Air Zoo Summer Science Camps are the coolest camp offerings in West Michigan, and are sure to thrill even the most discerning camper! The camps are listed below by age group (grade camper is entering in the fall) in order of date. See why the Air Zoo is quickly becoming one of the nation's top aerospace & science education centers! Air Zoo Summer Camps make a great gift!

Our professional educators will share the thrill of science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics (STEAM), and aerospace science with campers through TONS of hands-on activities and interactive experiments. Campers will get an in-depth look at the Air Zoo, including the 4D theater, full-motion flight simulators and much more! Because some portions of the camp will take place outdoors, campers need to dress appropriately for the weather.

Air Zoo members receive 10% off all camps.

General Information:

  • Each registered camper will be provided with full-day access to all rides and permanent exhibits for each day of camp. Campers also receive fantastic take-home items and an exclusive Air Zoo T-Shirt.
  • Registrations are due no later than two days prior to the camp start date. Later registrations may be accepted based on availability.
  • Extra half day of rides, museum exploration, and games for half-day campers in K " 12th grade camps. 9:00 - 1:00 @ $30/day, or 12:00 - 4:00 @ $35/day.
  • Extended camp day from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm is available for full-day campers. $10/day.
  • Lunch from the Kitty Hawk Cafe may be purchased by full-day campers at registration. $6/day for hot dog, grilled cheese, mini corn dogs, or peanut butter and jelly Uncrustables lunch.
  • The Air Zoo recommends that campers bring a water bottle and afternoon snack (if applicable).

PreK +1 Summer Camps

Kids, your favorite adult +1 is welcome to join you at camp so you can have twice the fun!

  • 3 year olds must bring an adult chaperone
  • 4 and 5 year olds who are not potty-trained must bring an adult chaperone
  • 4 and 5 year olds who are potty-trained are welcome to bring an adult chaperone, but it is not required

Develop your inner scientist as you use your five senses to observe and investigate the world around you. See, touch, taste, hear and smell all of the fun that hands-on experiments have to offer.

This camp is the blueprint for fun! Young architects will explore shapes and patterns while constructing towers, sculptures, pyramids, and other structures.

Monday: Tinkerer's Workshop - Use recycled and common materials to engineer new creations, like giant Lincoln Log structures, wire sculptures, and other crazy contraptions

Tuesday: Crime Scene Investigation - Investigate a crime scene, examine fingerprints, and analyze trace evidence using microscopes while solving an Air Zoo mystery!

Wednesday: Digging Up Michigan - Have a "rocking" good time as you excavate fossils, make glacier gak, and break apart geodes. Take a field trip to the WMU Geology Department to explore their museum and experience hands-on activities related to Michigan s natural resources and fossils.

Thursday:Biology - Dissect cow eyes, sample pond life, collect insects, and make a terrarium in this eco-friendly experience.

Friday: Rocketry - Build and fire up your own take-home rocket while exploring Newton's Laws of Motion and recording altitude and speed data.

Monday: Living on Mars - Mars One aims to create a permanent human colony on Mars in 2027 and has recently cut down the list of 200,000 candidates to just 100 who will undergo further testing. Investigate the real challenges these space pioneers will face and fly to Mars in our Starlab planetarium!

Tuesday: Sports Science - What do athletes have to do to train for baseball, swimming, volleyball, archery, or any other sport? Discover what makes athletes excel as you investigate the science of hand-eye coordination, balance, lung capacity, and much more. Continue your training under extreme conditions by experiencing the effects of weightlessness as you practice for a future of sports in space!

Wednesday: Remote Control Derby - Join our friends from Hobby Sports and the West Michigan Smoke Rings control-line model airplane group as you drive, hover, and fly a variety of remote control vehicles. Bring your own remote control toy to see how well you can do on the competition course!

Thursday: Lights, Camera, Action! - Set the stage for science fun as you learn what it takes to put on a theater production. Work with a team to create your own video, skit, stop-action movie, or a performance of your choice. Bring your own action figures to star in the show and bring your own camera if you want to record your production.

Friday: Survival Games - Do you have what it takes to survive in extreme conditions? Be the tribute to represent your district in shelter building, water sanitizing, and orienteering competitions. May the odds be ever in your favor!
