2018 Air Zoo Science Camps and Classes for Kids Aged PreK - 12th Grade

2018 Air Zoo Summer Day Camps

The Air Zoo offers the coolest science-based summer camps and classes in Southwest Michigan! Financial Aid and Extended Camp Day (4pm - 5pm) are available!


This summer, give your kids a summer camp experience they'll remember for the rest of their lives! (They'll learn a lot too, but we don't have to tell them that :) ). The Air Zoo Summer Science Camps are the coolest camp offerings in West Michigan, and are sure to thrill even the most discerning camper! The camps are listed below by age group (grade camper is entering in the fall) in order of date. See why the Air Zoo is quickly becoming one of the nation's top aerospace & science education centers! Air Zoo Summer Camps make a great gift!

Our professional educators will share the thrill of science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics (STEAM), and aerospace science with campers through TONS of hands-on activities and interactive experiments. Campers will get an in-depth look at the Air Zoo, including the 4D theater, full-motion flight simulators and much more! Because some portions of the camp will take place outdoors, campers need to dress appropriately for the weather.

Air Zoo members receive 10% off all camps.

Financial Aid and Scholarship funds are available! If applying for Financial Aid/Scholarships, please submit your application prior to registering for camp. Click HERE to download an application.

General Information:

  • Each registered camper will be provided with full-day access to all rides and permanent exhibits for each day of camp. Campers also receive fantastic take-home items and an exclusive Air Zoo T-Shirt.
  • Registrations are due no later than two days prior to the camp start date. Later registrations may be accepted based on availability.
  • Extra half day of rides, museum exploration, and games for half-day campers in K " 12th grade camps. 9:00 - 1:00 @ $30/day, or 12:00 - 4:00 @ $35/day.
  • Extended camp day from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm is available for full-day campers. $10/day.
  • Lunch from the Kitty Hawk Cafe may be purchased by full-day campers at registration. $6/day for hot dog, grilled cheese, mini corn dogs, or peanut butter and jelly Uncrustables lunch.
  • The Air Zoo recommends that campers bring a water bottle and afternoon snack (if applicable).

Air Zoo Eco Explorers CampExplore the "A" in STEAM (4th - 6th grades)

Join the Air Zoo and several of the art studios in the Park Trades Center to explore the science of art. Each day will be a new experience in creating art while learning the science behind it from the artists themselves and Air Zoo educators.


Monday: Chemistry in Art - Campers will investigate ancient pigment making techniques, use a variety of chemical salts to grow a crystal garden, and craft their own concrete creations " all while learning the chemistry in art. This day takes place at the Air Zoo.

Tuesday: Glass Art and Book Art -Campers will visit Glass Art Kalamazoo to learn the art of glass blowing and create their own fused glass decorative pieces and beads. The afternoon will be spent at the Kalamazoo Book Arts Center where campers will make paper to begin their own journal making project. This day takes place at the Park Trades Center.

Wednesday: Art in Nature - Nature is the greatest artist of all! Campers will study the texture and symmetry that nature creates so beautifully. They will compose art from light as they explore shadows and rainbows. Finally, the campers will use plants and minerals to make their own natural clothing dyes. This day takes place at the Air Zoo.

Thursday:Glass Art, Bead Art, and Book Art - Campers will continue the Glass Arts creations, then incorporate their glass beads into bead designs with Beadventure. In the afternoon they will return to Kalamazoo Book Arts Center to continue their homemade journal by using a printing press to design the cover made from the paper they made previously. This day takes place at the Park Trades Center.

Friday: Technology and Art - Innovative technologies are constantly being used to create art. Campers explore technologies of the past and present as they hand bind their journal with an instructor from the Kalamazoo Book Arts Center using traditional bookbinding tools. They will investigate graphic design as they create a 3D printed nameplate for the journal and learn the art of photography with a visiting expert in the field. Campers must bring their own device for taking photos (e.g., phone, iPad, iPod, camera, etc.). This day takes place at the Air Zoo.

Notes:

  • On Tuesday and Thursday campers are to be dropped off and picked up at the Park Trades Center rather than at the Air Zoo.
  • On Tuesday and Thursday campers must bring a sack lunch. Weather permitting, they will walk with the camp staff to Bronson Park for a picnic lunch.

Explore various scientific possibilities, and then test your own theories while experimenting with polymers, metals, ceramics, and composite materials using electricity, heat, and light energy.

Tuesday: Candy Chemistry - What makes Pop Rocks "pop" and sodas "fizz"? Experiment with floating chocolate bars, growing gummy bears, and exploding soda geysers in this sweet camp full of delicious fun.

Wednesday: Good Vibrations - Let's make some noise at the Air Zoo! We will create some beautiful music together while we investigate the science of sound. Experience the vibrations that cause sound waves with tuning forks, rubber bands, thunder tubes, and more. Practice your pitch, volume, and rhythm with musical water glasses, drums, and Boomwhackers. Then put what you ve learned to great effect by replacing some of the sound effects in a musical movie.

Thursday:North Pole Mystery...in August! - Help! Rudolph has been kidnapped by a jealous reindeer! Who will lead Santa's sleigh at Christmas time? Join the Air Zoo Bureau of Investigation to examine clues, rescue Rudolph, and bring the culprit to justice.

Friday: Design and Destroy - Try your hand at design and architecture and create your own awe-inspiring structures. Explore the science of shape as you plan and build hurricane towers able to withstand wind and rain. Are you up to the challenge?

Monday: High Tech Treasure Hunters - Technology and treasure - could there be a better combination? Treasure hunters will use computer programming, GPS technology and orienteering on a quest for hidden treasures. We will get field experience using our technological skills and then find and plant geocaches on the Air Zoo grounds.

Tuesday: Summer Camp 2050 - The year is 2050. Non-renewable energy sources are a thing of the past and renewable energy sources are in. Explore the currently available alternative energy sources to predict the future of summer camp in 2050!

Wednesday: Astronomy - Explore deep space in the Air Zoo's portable STARLAB planetarium! Learn about the life, death, and rebirth of stars and explore the mythology of constellations. Decide as a group on a name for a real star, and create your own mythology about a new constellation of your choosing!

Thursday: Design Lab - Go from original concept to prototype while you fabricate and print your own 3D designs. Modeled after NASA's aerodynamic investigations, use the engineering process to develop, build, test, and improve a unique glider.

Friday: All Hands on Deck - Officers and enlisted personnel! Welcome to your first mission briefing and hands-on training aboard the CV-63 USS Kitty Hawk Carrier. As the Cold War continues, your service is required to deliver American warplanes and pilots directly to the frontlines in the Pacific. Catapult the F-14 Tomcat and the F-8 Crusader safely off the deck of the USS Kitty Hawk into battle and climb into the cockpits of some Cold War aircraft.

Wednesday: Behind the Wings at the Air Zoo - Have you ever wondered what s behind the locked doors at the Air Zoo? How about entire rooms of collections that no one else gets to see? Explore the hidden world of the Air Zoo and climb inside of several airplane cockpits during this behind the wings experience.

Thursday: Archaeological Expedition - How do scientists know how people lived long ago? Investigate what can be learned from the things people leave behind, create your own artifacts, and dig up clues to a mysterious culture.

Friday: Mission IMpossible - Does your younger sibling go into your room uninvited? Would you like to be able to hear what s being said in another room? Construct your own electronic gadgets to create an alarm system, a listening device, a tracking system, or another gadget of your own invention!

Work with the professional restoration crew at the Air Zoo to help bring one of the World War II aircraft that was recently raised from the bottom of Lake Michigan closer to exhibit condition. Learn skills such as riveting, wing rib building, fabric covering, and cable swaging, and take a behind-the-scenes tour of the East Campus.

Investigate crime scenes, examine fingerprints, and use microscopes to analyze trace evidence like hairs and fibers to solve a crime at the Air Zoo! Girls Science Academy campWestern Michigan University and Air Zoo Aviation Camp (9th " 12th grades)

June 24 - 29 and July 8 - 13
6 pm Sunday - 5 pm Friday
$1,500 for the week, including room and board
Western Michigan University in partnership with the Air Zoo runs a week long overnight summer camp focusing on the exciting field of aviation. At WMU, investigate piloting in simulators and real Cirrus SR-20 aircraft, explore hands-on aircraft maintenance, and learn from speakers in the industry. On Thursday, travel to the Air Zoo to assist the restoration crew in returning two World War II aircraft back to museum quality condition, and climb into the cockpits of some of the amazing aircraft from the past.
