Position Title: Exhibits and Collection Manager


Supervisor: Director of Experience Fulfillment
Status: Exempt/Full-Time

Position Summary:
Lead all aspects of the Exhibits and Collection function for the Air Zoo, which includes directing teams responsible for the exhibit floor experience, the artifact collection, and aircraft restoration. Your creativity and innovation will flourish while you are providing vision for, creating, and implementing the exhibit strategy for the Air Zoo; designing and delivering an engaging, educational, and inspirational exhibit floor experience for guests of all ages through both temporary and permanent exhibits; ensuring the care, security, and preservation of all artifacts and exhibit items in the Air Zoo collection; overseeing all large-scale aircraft restoration projects;
expanding and diversifying the Air Zoo's partnerships with museums, government agencies, and other entities that design/develop exhibits and/or handle small- and large-scale artifacts; assisting in developing and delivering the Air Zoo's value proposition to community stakeholders; and developing and leveraging key relationships/partnerships at the local, state, and national levels to ensure revenue goals are met and exceeded.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Oversees all of the exhibit activities of the Air Zoo as well as the Air Zoo s collection of
  • artifacts, which includes restoration of loaned and owned aircraft;
  • Develops, implements, and directs the Air Zoo's Exhibits and Collection policies, procedures, and plans, and ensures that all activities are aligned to the goals and objectives of the plan as well as the Air Zoo's overall strategic plan;
  • Develops and tracks the Exhibits and Collection Department's annual budget in partnership with the Air Zoo's Director of Experience Fulfillment;
  • Manages all employees within the Department, including exhibit professionals, collections/archives specialists, and the restoration team. Responsibilities include regular performance reviews, monitoring hours worked/time off, ensuring success in all activities/duties performed, and always maximizing individual and team effectiveness;
  • Develops captivating, interactive guest experiences that ignite a passion for learning and inspire ongoing curiosity for a globally diverse audience;
  • Plans, coordinates, installs, and supplements short-term, "traveling" exhibit rentals;
  • Creates and realizes long-term strategy and schedule of interactive, interdisciplinary exhibits/programs that continuously introduce new scholarship in alignment with the Air Zoo 's Strategic Plan;
  • Monitors effectiveness of exhibits and designs and implements exhibit evaluations;
  • Drives intellectual effort to ensure structure and content of all displays and exhibits are scientifically and historically correct;
  • Ensures proper care, security, preservation, cataloguing, and management of the entire Air Zoo artifact collection on and off the exhibit floor;
  • Provides oversight to Restoration Manager on all aircraft restoration activities, including reporting requirements, of all loaned and owned aircraft;
  • Manages letters of agreement, contracts, loan documents, and all other associated legal paperwork and correspondences;
  • Cultivates and fosters relationships with all internal departments and external museum leaders, exhibits and collections professionals, and pertinent subject matter experts;
  • Collaborates with the Director of Engagement on identifying and securing grants, sponsors, and other funding sources for exhibits, education programs, and collections activities;
  • Represents the Air Zoo collection and exhibits at public/private events and through speaking engagements on radio, TV, and public speaking forums of all types;
  • Contributes to reports for all Air Zoo Board meetings, reporting progress of all exhibits and collections activities and sharing new initiatives;
  • Teams with the Marketing group to develop materials that will maximize the Air Zoo s public exposure for all exhibit experiences and unique artifacts as well as for graphic design work on exhibit signage, visitor materials, and other exhibit interpretive materials;
  • Attends all appropriate internal staff meetings;
  • Ensures communications to Air Zoo staff and volunteers regarding all Department initiatives is always targeted, timely, and effective;
  • Works with an internal/external Exhibits/Content Committee, soliciting ideas from the Committee on all facets of both exhibits and the collection and recruiting help in executing those ideas;
  • Provides a remarkable experience for every guest of the Air Zoo with every action and every interaction.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Prefer 5 or more years of professional experience successfully curating museum exhibitions and managing museum collections.
  • Thorough working knowledge and understanding of museum principles, procedures, and practices pertaining to artifact collections and exhibits.
  • Strong working knowledge of database applications and accompanying computer skills.
  • Experience working with Senior-level executives within an organization.
  • Proven track record of consistently developing experiences that attract and educate diverse audiences, incorporating technology and media in new, interactive, and unexpected ways.
  • Inspiring, motivating, "can do" attitude with a passion for positively impacting community through interactivity.
  • Proven experience in evaluating exhibit effectiveness and successfully implementing positive changes based on those evaluations.
  • Significant knowledge of both hands-on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) principles and the history of aviation and spaceflight desired.
  • Driving work ethic with consistently high level of initiative in all work to be performed.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and nurture partnerships to the benefit of all stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree in Museum Studies or comparable museum management. Masters a plus. Understanding of nonprofit environment, particularly with an informal education focus, is a plus.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Oversees all of the earned revenue generation and marketing activities of the Air Zoo;

  • Minimum of 10 years professional experience successfully managing/driving nonprofit development or corporate sales and marketing.

  • Proven track record of consistently exceeding annual revenue/sales targets greater than $500k.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills with the ability to engage, inspire, and influence a broad array of potential donors.

Position Title: Sales Coordinator - Group and Event Sales

Supervisor: Guest Experience Manager
Status: Full-Time Hourly
Salary: $12-$14 per hour

What will you be doing?

  • Secure bookings for daytime and evening events and activities for internal and external clients. Ensure that all resources are available and logistics are organized appropriately according to each client s individual need. Provide excellent customer service to every customer. Greet groups and clients upon arrival. Arrange, operate, and troubleshoot Air Zoo technology, A/V equipment, and wireless internet system for clients. Ensure all of the client s needs and expectations are being met during their event.
  • Solicit, schedule, and coordinate FAM tours for potential clients. Ensure appropriate resources, promotional literature, and support staff/volunteers are available and in place for each FAM tour.
  • Ensure and maintain proficiency in, and follow procedures and policies for, preparing contracts, collecting deposits, processing billing, daily cash-out activities, and use of museum resources. Provide support and guidance to team members and support staff/volunteers that enable them to perform their functions appropriately and within established procedures.
  • Complete training and maintain proficiency in Tessitura Software and associated products used by the Air Zoo. Ensure timely entries, transactions, and reports in the Tessitura system. Adhere to standards set forth by the Tessitura Consortium and the Air Zoo regarding the use of Tessitura Software and products.
  • Attend and represent the Air Zoo at meetings and industry expos and join/work with a focused networking group, for growing the organization s contacts, leads, and bookings of Groups and Events.
  • Coordinate with our approved list of contracted food service contractors/representatives, throughout the entire booking process, for any events requiring food service.
  • Maintain a calendar of held and booked activities that provides information pertaining to the use of museum space and resources and is accessible to Group and Event Sales team members and appropriate departments.
  • Complete training and maintain proficiency in all tasks associated with the Floor Manager position. Serve as Floor Manager including occasional evening bookings as needed.
  • Maintain awareness of Group and Event Sales industry best-practices and TAMS/TIPS certifications; knowledge of Michigan codes and laws/rules governing the Air Zoo s Liquor License; and knowledge of Air Zoo policies and procedures governing events and food service. Ensure all laws, certifications, policies, and procedures are adhered to.
  • Work collaboratively with the Air Zoo s Education Department, Volunteer Coordinator, Finance Department, Marketing Department, caterers, and vendors to ensure the seamless delivery of services and appropriate resources are available for all customers, internal and external.
  • Maintain a flexible daily/weekly schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned by, and reviewed with, supervisor.


Required experience / education:

  • Associates degree or equivalent (bachelors preferred)
  • One to three years of training or experience in sales
  • One to three years of training or experience in event planning/ scheduling /customer service
  • Demonstrate problem-solving skills

    Position Title: Operations Support Technician

    Supervisor: Operations Manager
    Status: Full time, Non-Exempt

    Position Objectives:
    Participate in the custodial, mechanical, electrical and technical maintenance of the Museum s attractions, experiences, exhibits, buildings and grounds to ensure an exceptional experience for customers, staff and volunteers.

    Responsibilities:

    • Participate in the custodial and maintenance care of the Museum s attractions, experiences and mechanical exhibits including, but not limited to, the Max Flight Simulators, the Zamperla Hot Air Balloon, Flying Circus, Ferris Wheel and Paratrooper rides; the Missions Theatre, Doron simulator, AV and lighting systems, permanent exhibits, future acquisitions and temporary exhibits.
    • Participate in all custodial, mechanical, electrical and technical maintenance of the Museum s buildings and grounds. Insure timely repairs and maintenance that meet or exceed organizational standards.
    • Accurately and thoroughly complete periodic maintenance, inspection routines, and paperwork as required by state law, federal law, equipment manufacturers and Museum policies.
    • Ensure the proper performance of equipment. Promptly troubleshoot and repair malfunctioning equipment or damaged items.
    • Accurately and thoroughly complete all required paperwork for maintenance and inspection tasks.
    • Make note of problems with any of the attractions, facility, and exhibits. Report these issues to the Operations Manager. In the absence of the supervisor, meet each day with the Director of Operations or the Guest Experience Manager and review the status of all equipment, discussing anything pertinent to the day s operation.
    • Enforce procedures for maintaining high standards of operational safety, quality and reliability for the well-being of the facility, artifacts, staff, volunteers and patrons.
    • Perform training duties for designated ride operators and attractions personnel, including oversight responsibilities during these training periods.
    • Ensure that ride operators and attractions personnel are aware of and follow appropriate process to report and document maintenance and repair needs.
    • Communicate with the Operations Manager for daily tasks, planning, schedule, feedback, and guidelines. In absence of, or as directed by, the Operations Manager; contact or oversee contracted service providers, coordinating their activities within contract and budget parameters.
    • Operate the attractions and exhibits as necessary. Assist with operations staff breaks, absences and shortages as necessary.
    • Operate power equipment such as aerial work platforms, hand and power tools, snow blower, snow removal tractor, fork lift and Museum vehicles.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager.
    • Weekend, evening and holiday hours required. Availability must be flexible. Provide on-call support as needed.

    Minimum Education / Experience Required:

    • High School Diploma or equivalent
    • Custodial, mechanical, and electrical troubleshooting experience strongly desired.
    • Knowledge of Windows/Apple based computer control systems and AV troubleshooting desired.

    Part-Time Positions

    Position Title: Part-Time Science Educator

    Supervisor: Education Manager
    Status: Part-time; non-exempt

    Position Summary:
    The part-time educator is responsible for delivering exciting, high-quality educational programs to schools, families, and adult groups. This position offers a unique opportunity to practice a wide range of skills; lead innovative, interdisciplinary activities; and connect people of all ages to the STEAM disciplines while delivering educational programs for the Air Zoo. The educator is an energetic, dependable individual who likes working with people and inspiring others to learn about science and is instrumental in strengthening visitors awareness and appreciation of the Air Zoo. Good public speaking, organizational, and customer service skills required. This is a part-time, hourly, non-exempt position. Scheduling is flexible with select weekdays, evening, overnight, and weekend work required.

    Responsibilities:

    • Deliver educational programs including school, after-school and outreach programs, summer and holiday camps for families and children, camp-in overnight programs, birthday parties, special event programs and scout badge programs.
    • Learn the activity you will be teaching and be able to answer questions about the topic (training provided)
    • Set-up classroom and teach educational activities
    • Maintain control of the classroom and students
    • Actively engage the audience
    • Follow the established schedule for the daily events
    • Clean classrooms after each program (put away supplies, wash equipment and tables, sweep floors if needed)
    • Must be able to carry totes with materials (up to 40 pounds) from place to place
    • Deliver exhibit floor education and participate in program development and evaluation as required

    Qualifications:

    • High School Graduate or Equivalent. Some college-level education preferred with an emphasis in Education or Science-related field. Certification and experience teaching in classroom and informal museum settings helpful

    • Reliable and punctual; able to multi-task and manage time effectively
    • Able to work independently and as part of a close team
    • Excellent verbal and writing skills; strong organizational skills

    Position Title: Guest Experience Ambassador

    Supervisor: Customer Service Manager

    Position Objectives:

    The Guest Experience Ambassador (GEA) position has direct contact with our Guests. They set the stage and atmosphere for our Guests visits. Point of Sale GEA staff process admission tickets and membership sales, answer phones, work in retail, and assist our Guests. Ride Operator GEA staff are responsible for safely operating all of the Air Zoo attractions while ensuring our Guests have the best experience possible during their visit. Safety, customer service, professionalism and accuracy are the priority.
